New Zealand is a long way from anywhere – and as such it can take a while for trends to make their way here. Granted; these days with social media and the internet the world is a much smaller place but it can feel like things take a frustratingly long time to become commonplace here. Even more so the further south you live.In 2010 when I was in Paris I noticed (from the extensive time I spent in patisseries) these plentiful little cookie sandwiches called macarons. They were everywhere and in a huge assortment of flavours, so one day in Paris my friend Meg and I decided to try them. We bought a few flavours each and wandered to where my guidebook told me there was a park nearby. It turned out to have been a 2nd century amphitheatre that had been converted to a park. That’s Europe for you. But that’s also beside the point. At the first taste of that crunchy but soft centred almond merangue cookie with creamy ganache inside it; I was hooked. We ate macarons in our little village in Burgundy, we ate them at Marie Antoinette’s estate at Versaille (it seemed appropriate), and when my 16 year old sister arrived in Nice I ensured she tried them too to ensure the ongoing addiction to these delightful pieces of French patisserie.Upon my return they were one of the treats I missed the most, but eventually macarons had their moment and became almost easy to find all the way down here in New Zealand. Miracles do happen!So naturally I decided to immortalise my love of macarons with this piece of art; so that I can take some with me wherever I go.
